Modern Liberalism and The Cult of Indiscriminate-ness

Hey, fellow cave dwellers! If you have about 45 minutes of free time, I have a treat for you. Evan Sayet, former joke writer for Bill Maher of Politically Incorrect and pundit describes for us at a Heritage Foundation lecture, one of the key traits of modern liberalism...the Cult of Indescriminateness. I'd be interested in what you think. The link is at Youtube, and the video is okay, but the insights are remarkable and clear.

He connects his thoughts to a favorite book of mine by Allan Bloom "The Closing of the American Mind." He highlights one of Blooms points of that of the false idea of the "open mind." I have been pondering this in my interactions with people. People are afraid to come to formal conclusions which are clearly stated. HOWEVER, they are willing, perhaps unwittingly, to hold to conclusions that are either implied or assumed in their open-minded "non-statements," such as, "No one can say for sure that truth exists;" or "I going to remain open-minded on Christianity, but not make any decisions..." , indifference that is masked as humble open-mindedness.

Your thoughts, anyone?

These statements are always self contradictory as you already know.

If I say "objective truth does not exist" or that it cannot be known, I depend on it existing and me knowing it to say such a thing.

The foundations of modern liberalism are primarily gross logical self contradiction.

They say "don't judge others" and in the process they "judge" (by their nonsensical definition) anyone who does. They say "we must be thoroughly tolerant" yet such an ideal (as all ideals do) requires one to be intolerant against all contradictory ideals.

They think they're "progressive" yet nothing could be further from the truth. They destroy tradition and history and wish to build from scratch. Unless they themselves are much better than their fathers before them (and in their naive way they really believe they are - remember "dont trust anyone over 30?) then they will reach no greater heights than the generation before them did. A true progressive on the other hand not only appreciates tradition but assumes it and builds on it. They, the true progressive, thereby actually... progress.

Thank you for your insights! It's wonderful to find those who know the faulty premises of this gagging sophistry. Kudos, bro!

I recall Thomas Aquinas stating something, and I paraphrase, "To say yes to one thing means saying no to a thousand things..."

Thanks for dropping by. Don't be a stranger!

I don't have time to watch the video, but it sounds like I agree with it completely.

Dittos all the way to Tim Troutman's diatribe. I couldn't have said it any better.

Saur...

Just START the video. EVERYONE saw the length and said they didn't have time. By now almost a million people have watched it (many repeatedly!). My favorite line from when the video was going viral was in National Review Online who wrote "This talk by Evan Sayet" (with a link) "is cramming our inboxes, please stop sending it."
